M3GAN, the James Wan and Jason Blum-produced horror film about an android doll who takes her role deadly seriously, is set to come out in January. The trailer blew up on TikTok, however, and the producers and Universal are already mulling over a sequel to the movie.
A recent New York Times article, in announcing that Wan and Blum are looking to merge their two producing companies in a conglomerate with a first-look deal with Universal, also shared that the studio is “so pleased” with how M3GAN turned out that they’re more than ready to make a second one.

M3GAN was originally an idea from Wan (The Conjuring, Malignant), who first pitched it to Warner Bros. That studio passed given they already had their own evil doll in the form of Annabelle, and Blum eagerly got on board to produce as well and land the film at Universal.
If M3GAN is as good as its trailer, then I think horror fans will be more than ready for a sequel. Here’s the official synopsis of the first movie:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
M3GAN premieres in theaters on January 6, 2023. No news yet on an official sequel, though we can hope.
